A will is the foundation of an effective estate plan

When most people think of estate planning, they think of wills first and foremost. A will is both the foundation of a good estate plan and the most popular way of transferring assets to loved ones and important institutions after death. Wills and estate plans often reflect the values of testators.

Not too long ago, we told you the story of the probate of the will of award-winning author Harper Lee. Lee died in 2016 at the age of 89. During her life, Lee was a person who valued her privacy. This preference was respected by the administrators of her estate. They were able to persuade the probate court not to make her will a part of the public record, as wills usually are after they are submitted to the court.

It isn't always possible to prevent the publication of a will. But there are ways of affording privacy to testators who value this. Other testators might prefer to provide for their descendants for as long as possible, or they might want to provide for a college or place of worship. Attorney and CPA J. Kelly Kennedy has helped many people in Lakeland with crafting an estate plan that takes their needs and values into account.

Mr. Kennedy listens when clients explain their unique situations. He then puts his professional training as a lawyer and certified public accountant to work, helping clients with creating an estate plan that takes their needs and preferences into account. Scheduling a meeting with Mr. Kennedy to discuss estate planning options might be a good first step. For more information, see the will information page on our website.
